I have started walking more than I have recently. As I have increase my walking I have noticed how much fun it is to look for new places to walk and explore. The last couple of days, my kids and I have been exploring local rails-to-trails pathways in the area. Some are familiar and some are brand new. The completely brand new ones are exciting because they promise more places to explore and see while walking around.
When it gets cooler and into the fall season, I want to go explore some of the trails in the Indiana Dunes National and State Parks. When my oldest son was in the Boy Scouts, we did a fall hike on the beach that went onto a trail through the woods and back to the road leading to the Pavilion. I always enjoy those walks in the fall when the air is cooler. Especially walking on the beach for long distances since it is a challenge compared to normal walking on a hard surface.
I have seen plans to extend our rails-to-trails for more miles to reach other county parks, and to connect beyond. I am excited at the thought of having easily accessible pathways that are easy to bike away from lots of traffic. I have been daydreaming about saving up for an electric bike that I can ride to the Chicago Lakefront from here, or maybe from here further into Indiana.
When I was a kid, I remember carefree summer days riding my bike with my brother and our friends all over our little town where we lived. Every so often, we'd take a longer bike ride to explore what was in the next town over. Those were always fun because we usually saw places we had never seen before, even when riding in the car with our parents. Friends always seemed to know all of the shortcuts and trails to get somewhere new. I miss that. Exploring the bike paths and rails-to-trails brings back those memories.
